Delilah is a 10 year old female Maltese. She weights about 9 pounds. She is a sweet little girl that came to us from a crowded animal shelter. She was anemic and weak and not in good general health when we first got her. She is recuperating now at Carmel HOlistic Veterinary Clinic and is getting healthier and stronger every day. She will need to have a lump removed when she is up for surgery and then she will be ready for adoption. If you would like to meet Delilah, fill out our online adoption application. |

Henry is a 4 pound, very senior Chihuahua. We think he may be between 15 and 18 years old. He came to us from Salinas Animal Services after being found as a stray. One eye needed to be removed due to glaucoma, and we are hoping to save his remaining eye with medical intervention. He is a precious little guy that would love a safe loving home to stretch his legs and snuggle up in during his retirement years! If you would like to meet Henry, fill out our online adoption application. |

Lucy has been waiting the longest of our POMDR dogs for her new home! We want the world to know SHE'S READY!! She came to us as a stray from San Jose Animal Services, where she was a staff favorite due to her timid, but sweet personality. She is probably a Terrier mix about 10-years old, and weighs 12 pounds. Lucy had extensive dental work done at the shelter including 13 extractions! Now that Lucy gets good food, love and patience she is very healthy. She LOVES food and has no trouble eating whatever you put into her dish. Lucy likes to curl up on a lap and have her ears rubbed, gets along fine with other dogs and does not seem interested in cats. This little girl loves to sleep in bed right next to her foster mom, but also crates nicely. She is potty trained, walks nicely on leash and loves to ride in the car!! New situations can still be kind of scary for her, and she will startle if you move toward her too quickly. But get out the treats and she is your new best friend! We would like Lucy to have a home where she can to continue feeling safe and secure. That may be in a home with other pets, or she could be a single dog in the family. Due to her gentle nature she would be a great match for a retired person(s) looking for a sweet life companion. If you would like to meet Lucy, fill out our online adoption application. |
Sally is an 11 year old aussie/border collie mix. She weighs 65 pounds. She is a very smart dog and understands many words. She is friendly, gentle, and good around children and babies. She has been active most of her life and like to go on car rides, walks, to the beach, plays ball, and loves to be brushed. She does have some skin allergies, so needs a special diet to keep her skin healthy. Her guardian is in poor health and can no longer care for her. If you are interested in Sally, please fill out an online adoption application. |
Molly is a 14 1/2 year old Australian Shepherd. She is very devoted to her person, but her person has to move to senior housing and Molly can not go with her. Molly used to live with other dogs, but has been an only dog for so many years, it's probably best if she stays an only dog at this point in her life. She has no experience with cats. Molly can tell dog lovers from non-dog lovers. The dog-lovers get the best of her love. Non dog-lovers she ignores! Molly is deaf, but her vision is very good. She has some arthritis, but has been taking a glucosamine supplement that really helps. She is very reliably housebroken and will quietly stare at you until you get the hint and let her out. She weighs just about 40 pound and is a very sweet dog who deserves a great second home in her golden years. If you are interested in Molly, please fill out an online adoption application. |
|
Misty is a 4 pound, 15 year old Chihuahua. She is in good health for an older gal. She has had her teeth cleaned recently and had three teeth pulled. Misty is a sweet dog who enjoys laying in the sun, taking short walks, and curling up for a nap and then another nap. She gets along just fine with other dogs and happily follows around the other dogs in her foster home. If you are interested in Misty, please fill out an online adoption application. |
|
Bingo is a 13 pound, 8 year old Poodle/Dachshund mix. Whoever adopts BINGO is a winner! He is a great dog that gets along well with people and other dogs. He loves to go for walks and fetch his kong toy. He is a well behaved dog and is even crate trained. If you are interested in Bingo, please fill out an online adoption application. |
|
Chewy aka Bucky Sue is a two year old, 15 pound mixed breed dog. She may be a Jack Russel/Chihuahua mix. Chewy had a horrible incident a year ago when she suffered a gunshot wound. She was paralyzed for several months and used a cart to get around. She has since made great improvements, and can now walk on her own although she can get tipsy if she's nervous, excited, or tired. Chewy is a submissive dog who is gentle and friendly. She is fine with other dogs and has lived with cats. Chewy came from a home with 11 dogs. When the couple separated 3 dogs stayed with one partner and 4 with another and Buster and three other dogs were boarded while the guardians searched for new homes for them. After several months of boarding and no luck finding new homes, POMDR was contacted to take the foursome in. Chewy is looking for a foster home that can help get her to her physical therapy appointments. POMDR pays for her therapy while she is in foster care. Or if you are interested in Chewy, please fill out an online adoption application. |
|
Blondingo aka Blondy is a two-year-old, 13- pound male Chihuahua mix. He is a sweet, happy, kissy little fellow who gets along with dogs, cats, and people. He was found as a stray as a puppy and lived in a home with 10 other dogs. When the couple separated 3 dogs stayed with one partner and 4 with another and Fran, Blondy, Chewy, and Buster were boarded while the guardians searched for new homes for them. After several months of boarding and no luck finding new homes, POMDR was contacted to take the foursome in. They are a great bunch of dogs and will be happy to start their new lives as members of new families. It is fine for them to go to separate homes or to get adopted together in any combination. Buster and Blondy are particularly bonded to each other. See Buster Brown, Chewy, and Francheetah's bios on this page as well. If you are interested in Blondy, please fill out an online adoption application. |
|
Buster is a Boxer/Shepherd, (maybe some Shar Pei), short in stature but big in charm. He's a stocky sturdy guys at 80 pounds. He is affectionate and calm. He seems to love everybody (especially men) and gets along with all dogs. He has lives with cats and small dogs. He is well mannered in the house and on the leash, and he rides in the car like a gentleman. Buster's never met a treat he didn't like, so we're trying to work off the effects of too many trips to the cookie jar. We know when he finds a permanent family, his fun, goofball personality will shine through. He was originally found as a stray as an abused puppy and lived in a home with 10 other dogs, most of which were under 15 pounds. At adoption events he is very gentle and calm with everyone who approaches. He gently walks up to he smallest dogs at the events and gives them kisses. He is the epitome of a gentle giant. He loves to lean on you and squeeze between your legs from behind to sit close to you. You can not help but fall in love in only a few minutes with Buster Brown. If you are interested in Buster, please fill out an online adoption application. |
|
Allie, an 8 year old, 10 pound Chihuahua mix, was found as a stray with another dog and taken to the shelter. They were being kenneled together and her buddy got adopted, but Allie did not. She was already a little shy, but once the other dog left, she became depressed as well. The shelter staff recognized how sweet she was and that she needed a different environment to move on with her life. After coming into our program, we found out that Allie had mammary cancer and she had a double mastectomy. We caught the cancer early and her prognosis is excellent for a healthy rest of her life. Allie is a sweet little one that would do well with a calm, gentle person or couple. Having another outgoing, friendly dog in the home would be helpful for her as well. If you are interested in Allie, please fill out an online adoption application. |
|
Samual aka Sammy is a sweet 8 year old Corgi Mix. Sammy ended up at Monterey County Animal Services when the person he had been with his whole life could no longer care for him. He loves to spend his days lounging in his favorite chair or following his foster mom around the house. Even though he is a senior dog, he is very active and loves to walk and jump and play. He likes to sleep in bed and burrow down deep in the covers. If you are interested in Samual, please fill out an online adoption application. |
|
Francesca is a 14 year old Lhasa Apso whose guardian had to give her up when she was admitted to hospice and has since passed away from lung cancer. Fran came to us a bit overweight, but is slimming down with exercise and controlled food portions. She is a sweet gal who came to us grieving for her previous owner and the loss of everything she knew, but she has adjusted and is doing well. She enjoys going for short walks, she is great with other dogs and cats. She likes to sleep at the foot of the bed or on a doggy bed next to you. She is housebroken and just an all around good, easy girl to be with. Fran would love to be someone's loyal and loving companion in her golden years. If you are interested in Fran, please fill out an online adoption application. |
|
Reba is a 12 pounds long hair Chihuahua/long hair Dachshund mix. She is ultra sweet. We think she is about 10 years old and has had many, many litters of puppies over her lifetime. She was found as a stray in Salinas and was not claimed at the animal shelter. If you are interested in Reba, please fill out an online adoption application. |
|
William is a 6 pound, 10 year old liver and red Chihuahua mix. He is a real character with his great big ears, cloudy eyes, and most of his teeth missing. William just needs to be pampered and made to feel special. He deserves it! He was found as a stray in Salinas and was not claimed at the animal shelter. If you are interested in William, please fill out an online adoption application. |
|
Ginger is an 8 pound, 8 year old Chihuahua mix. She is a very refined and gentle dog. She was found as a stray at taken to Monterey County Animal Services where she was a staff favorite. She is very sweet and not timid with people or other dogs, but she is calm and respectful. She is a very quiet dog. She hasn't barked at all in her foster home. She is easy to have around and would fit well into just about any home either as an only dog or with other dogs. She is a real gem. A very special dog that deserves the best! If you are interested in Ginger, please fill out an online adoption application. |
|
Mario is a 10 year old, 7 pound, Chihuahua/Terrier mix that came to use from Salinas Animal Services. He is a sweet and happy little guy that likes to snuggle and gets along with other dogs. His FAVORITE toy is the little red Kong! He loves to have it thrown and then he will bring it back for more throwing fun. He has had a dental cleaning, full check up, senior blood panel and is a very healthy boy. He walks nicely on the leash and loves to take walks. If you are interested in Mario, please fill out an online adoption application. |
|
Cole is a 2 year old, 55 pound, border collie/lab mix. He had a rough start in life living most of his life in a neglectful situation with little food, companionship, training, socialization and his most minimal needs barely being taken care of. That life is now behind him and he is blossoming into the wonderful dog he was meant to be. Cole is great with people and bonds quickly to his caregiver. He wants to be loved and gives love so freely. Cole's ideal home would be an active person or couple who have experience with training large, young active dogs. He is learning to walk with a gentle leader which helps immensely. Otherwise he pulls on leash and barks and pulls when seeing other dogs. He is a wanna be alpha male, so he would do best in a home with no other dogs or with a submissive female dog. He is intelligent and catches on quickly when being trained with positive reinforcement methods. Cole is not yet completely housebroken. He would do great if his new person is willing to crate train him. Cole may or may not be a great beach and off leash hiking dog. We just aren't sure yet how he will react to every dog he meets. Some dogs he's fine with, others he is not. Having a large fenced yard would be ideal for Cole in case he does not become a reliable off leash dog. Having space to run and chase a ball is important for him. Cole needs to be in a home without cats. Cole is currently in boarding at Carmel Holistic Vet Clinic. We would love to have him in a foster home instead, but right now this is his only option. If you have the experience and time to dedicate to Cole, and would like to foster him, please contact us If you would like to meet Cole, please fill out an online adoption application. |

Iggy is a ten-year-old Italian Greyhound. He arrived at the Lancaster Shelter in May in terrible shape. It's been a long road to recovery for Iggy with many ups and downs for him, his foster family, and everyone that knows him and loves him. Iggy was covered with benign lumps called hemangiomas that had to be lasered off. After several laser surgeries, he was doing wonderful and even had a family ready to adopt him. Unfortunately, we then discovered a large fast growing lump under his right leg. He is currently scheduled for surgery to remove the lump. His prognosis is still guarded, but his foster family cherishes every day they have with this sweet, special soul. Iggy is in hospice care at this point. His foster parents are taking it day by day and monitoring his comfort level to be sure he has quality of life. He may surprise us all and turn his whole prognosis around. We are open to miracles. For now, Iggy is loved and loves those around him with all his heart. Right now his adoptability status is on hold. Please consider sponsoring Iggy. |

Lexi is one giant-sized lap dog and would love to have someone's lap to call her own. She and her sister, Roxie, also on the website, are each around 100 lbs. and are possibly Anatolian-shepherd mixes. They were adopted from the Monterey County shelter at two months of age; they were born in late 2003. Lexi and Roxie are beloved dogs who must be given up due to catastrophic changes in family circumstances. They would love to remain together but can also be adopted separately. They have lived with other dogs and cats and have even helped their mom foster kittens and puppies over the years. Lexi would probably do best with a male dog, with her beloved sister, or as an only dog (she can be somewhat dominant when meeting new dogs). She is spayed and in good health; she would love to have a home where she has a yard to stretch those long legs. Please call Lexi's mom, Donna, if you think you might be able to give Lexi a home for the rest of her life - 831-917-0443. |

Roxie is a whole lot of sweetheart. She is around 100 lbs. and is possibly an Anatolian-shepherd mix. Roxie and her sister, Lexi (also on website) are sisters that were born in late 2003 and were adopted together from the Monterey County Shelter at two months of age. Their family is heartbroken to give them up but must, due to major changes in life circumstances. Roxie is spayed, active and in very good condition; she has lived with several cats and dogs and even has helped her mom to foster kittens and puppies over the years. She would love to stay in a home with her sister but could also be adopted separately. She would do best in a home with either a male dog, her beloved sister, or no other dogs (she can be somewhat dominant when meeting new dogs, especially females). Roxie loves children but would probably be best with those past the toddler age, as she can knock small ones over without meaning to. If you are looking to add a large amount of canine love to your life, please call Roxie's mom, Donna, at 831-917-0443. |

Scooby is a dog of mystery. We really are not sure what the best breed description for him might be! He is possibly a chihuahua-Boston terrier-mix with a cute bushy and curly tail. He is around 20 lbs. and two years old. Scooby was rescued by a kind-hearted family as a young pup and they now have to find him a new home due to catastrophic changes in their life circumstances. Scooby does well with other dogs and with cats; he also does well with children. He is an active little guy and would love to live somewhere with a nice yard, some fun playmates, and lots of outings planned. If you think he might be the right dog for you, please call his mom, Donna at 831-917-0443. |

Blu is a 40-pound senior American Bulldog mix who lived a tough life. The vet thinks he's about ten, but those ten years were tough ones. He has callouses on his elbows and arthritis in his joints, probably from laying on hard cement all his life. (He absolutely loves his soft, fluffy dog beds in his foster home!) Blu was abandoned in a home for at least three weeks before finally being found. He was weak, emaciated and barely able to stand. Now in foster care, this old boy is living the good life and is very appreciative of a kind word, a pat on the head or a back scratch--you can tell he didn't get many in his previous life. Blu is happy to lay at your feet and enjoys being an indoor dog. He is house trained and uses a doggie door. He takes Rimadyl and joint supplements daily. Blu is currently in foster care in Santa Cruz, for more information please fill out an AFRP adoption application. |

|
Augie is a gentle older red merle Australian Shepherd who came to AFRP from the Hollister Shelter. He weighs about 40 pounds and is at least 8 years old, perhaps older. His teeth are worn and his coat was in a terrible state of neglect when he arrived. He was covered with fleas and ticks, and had foxtails imbedded in his paws and skin. Now in foster care, Augie has been bathed, brushed, and looks great! He will sit for a treat and loves attention. He had probably lived his life as an outdoor dog, and is quickly learning his house manners. He's a bright boy and is very eager to please. Even though he's an older gentleman, Augie has plenty of energy and will play fetch with you all day long. He is currently in foster care in Santa Cruz. If you'd like more information, please fill out an AFRP adoption application. |

A wonderful senior dog, housebroken, quiet, relaxed, good with female dogs, great with children, enjoys walks, watch him come alive when his KONG is in his mouth, can play catch and fetch for as long as you want to, then he will quietly settle down to nap on his fluffy bed. Bodhie will make the ideal canine companion to a retired couple. To be considered to adopt Bodhie, please conact ACGSRescue of Hollister at 831-636-7559 or email: vivatacgsinc@aol.com |

Maltese/Shih Tzu mix 13 years Picked up of the streets in Gilroy, on December 30 2009, he tugged at our hearts as we watched him walking round and round on the concrete floor at the Hollister Shelter, bumping his head on the walls, Gramps is blind. After several blood panels to rule out any serious illnesses, the vet said he has Hyper Thryroidism This explained his weight loss. He is now being treated for the ailment and is putting on weight slowly. Charlie loves his food. Other than the Thryroid problem he is fair shape. He is good with other dogs, enjoys quiet time at your side, while you watch television or read a book. Loves to lay in the sunshine, and roll in the grass. He is a happy little dog. We would love to find a permanent home for him. Charlie has been with the rescue since Jan 5, 2010. To be considered to adopt him please contact ACGSRescue of Hollister (831)636-7559 or email: vivatacgsinc@aol.com |

My name is Kody, and I am a 7 1/2 year old black lab mix. I have lived with my family since I was 4 months old. My mom and dad got married, and I now have a big family! There are 2 teenagers, a 4 year old and a baby. Although I love my mom and dad, and my teenage brother and sister, I just cannot seem to adjust to the little ones (their energy makes me anxious).I am happy being both indoors and outdoors, although I have only ever slept indoors overnight. I love to hike, walk and run. I can chase a ball like nobody’s business. I still try to sit in my mom’s lap like I am still 4 months old if she is on the floor. I am trained to sit, lay down, stay and to go in my crate (although it’s been a long time since I’ve been in there!). I keep good watch at my house, but I also listen well and stop any barking I do with a simple "enough". All of my shots are up to date, I am neutered and micro-chipped. If you are interested or would like more information, please call my mom Nicole at 408-892-1498 or my grandma Patricia at 831-625-0357. |

Rocky is a 5 year old neutered male Border Collie. He gets along with other dogs and is great with people. His guardians can no longer care for him and he is needing a new loving family. Contact Joel at joel@americandreamthemovie.com for more information about Rocky or call (831) 475-2706. |

Helga is a Lab/Bulldog mix. She is 9 years old and weighs 55 pounds. She is a total character - goofy, full of life and love, super affectionate, and very active. She loves to be loved and loves back scratches. She is not shy, she'll take all the love she get get from everyone she meets. She is a very happy, confident and fun-loving dog who needs lots of off leash exercise to thrive - runs on the beach, hikes in the hills, outings to the dog park. Helga loves everyone she meet and is good with kids. She is also good with other dogs. She shouldn't be in a home with an alpha female though. And no kitties for Helga! To meet Helga, contact pamjreid@excite.com or call 510-708-8258 |

Andy is a 10-year-old, 7 pound Chihuahua with a super sweet and loving personality. He's in foster care now, but life wasn't always so easy. Hit by a car, Andy had a shattered pelvis and was surrendered to the San Jose Shelter when his family could not afford the care he needed. AFRP got Andy the surgery he needed, and he's healed up very well. Andy loves the company of all people and small dogs He is bossy with cats at first but does adjust. He enjoys rides in the car, lap time and walks. He loves the beach and enjoys running and playing in grassy areas. Andy needs daily eye drops for glaucoma, and leaks a bit of urine when he sleeps. He needs a special someone to see him through his senior years, can you help? For more information about Andy, please email Animal Friends Rescue Project. |
All of our adoptable dogs are cared for in quality loving foster homes. Each of our foster homes must meet exceptional standards of care for the dogs they foster and the highest levels of professionalism in all aspects of their volunteer work. Each dog in our program receives a thorough veterinary exam upon intake. The senior dogs also get a senior blood panel and in many cases a dental cleaning and any necessary extractions.
All adopters must agree to a home visit and annual visits throughout the life of the dog in order to adopt one of the dogs entrusted to our care. We do appreciate your willingness to open your heart and your home to a dog in need of a permanent family. We take our role of placing dogs in a new home very seriously and do everything we can to ensure the dogs we place are well cared for throughout their lives.
Often senior dogs make the most grateful companions. They are typically already house broken, know basic commands, need only minimal to moderate exercise, and are content to be safe in a loving home taking a much deserved nap in a peaceful environment. Whether you adopt a senior dog or a younger dog we thank you for helping to save a life!
