Karris is a sweet gentle soul. She loves people and looks to them for comfort as she has low confidence. She's fine around other smaller dogs but mostly just wants the comfort and stability of a person. From what we can tell so far, Karris takes a while to open up and bond with people. She needs a patient person and would likely do best with a yard she can access whenever she needs. Karris is able to hold her bladder but needs help understanding where she should go potty.
On walks, Karris is very slow and needs lots of encouragement to continue. If a dog barks at her she will freeze up and shut down. She can be timid with people - if a new person comes near or pets her, she'll start shaking and she stands for a long time before being able to settle. She does not seem treat motivated and cannot be won over with offerings of food. Just gentle hands and patience.
Karris doesn't have a mean bone in her body. She must've experienced a lot of hardship as a stray and possibly in her last home, but she approaches life with gentle, non-reactive unease. She has a beautiful white coat, calm demeanor, and will come to fully trust her people despite how nervous she is about everything. She'd probably do better as a single dog in a quiet home. If there were other dogs, she could adjust to other slow-moving sweethearts.
Karris spends most of her days sleeping. She can be wrapped in a blanket, and she'll cuddle up as a little burrito in her area all day - only getting up occasionally to see where her people are or to reposition. Her fear has never translated into barking or reactiveness, but she is scared of a lot of things - vacuums, cars, cyclists, et cetera. She'll freeze up for the most part and have a "deer in the headlights" look. Karris does find comfort in head scratches and slowly comes to her people from time to time to receive a little love. Karris is a sweetheart and any home would be lucky to have her!
Karris came to us from the Santa Cruz County Animal Shelter. We do not know what her previous life was like, as she was picked up as a stray in the streets.
