Guppy is true to his roots, blending the energetic, playful spirit often seen in a Border Collie with the loyal, protective qualities of a Shepherd-type dog. He thrives when he has both physical activity and mental engagement in his day; whether that's a lively game of fetch, exploring new environments, or simply being your trusty sidekick on everyday adventures. He also has a softer side and enjoys winding down with his person, happily settling in for snuggles after a full day of fun.

Guppy is a sweet guy, but tends to be too excited by cats and would not be suited to live with them. Any doggie siblings need to be carefully considered and introduced to ensure a good match.

Guppy is a smart boy and knows cues like "sit," "down," "paw," and even "other paw!" He likes to be a watchdog and may bark at passers-by, but is easily distracted with treats or affection. A true lover, his favorite place to sleep is next to you, preferably under the blankets. His best friend--apart from you--is his beloved squeaky toy, which he loves to chase in the morning and place in a safe spot when he's not playing. He's great at communicating and will lean his head against your legs for pets. Once he gets to know you, he'll plop over on his back for belly rubs and will kick his leg if you scratch just the right spot. You know he's relaxing when you hear his signature long grumble as he settles down.

We are looking for an experienced adopter because while Guppy is a calm, sweet dog most of the time, he has had occasional moments of aggression while being handled. X-rays revealed significant arthritis of the spine and we think this may have contributed to these behavior incidents. Guppy is now on an anti-inflammatory and pain medication and is back to his happy, loving self.

We do think it he would do best in a quiet female only home as he seems to prefer women over men. He has come a long way and now does well on walks, preferring to go at his own pace and sniff every flower. With patience and time, he has warmed up to strangers, but on occasion, he will still bark at dogs or people. He also needs to be mindfully introduced to guests; after all, his number one priority is keeping his home safe! Once he feels safe, he'll find a cozy spot beside, beneath, or on top of you.

Guppy came to us from Hitchcock Road Animal Shelter after being found as a stray. He is now looking for a committed, experienced, and patient home that can continue to help him thrive while respecting his needs and boundaries. With the right understanding and structure, Guppy has so much potential, and he's ready for a person who can appreciate both his joy and his complexity.
